Methodology
We use repeatable parameter tests to build recommendations for different use cases.
How recommendations are formed
- Choose representative input types (portrait, logo, icon, sprite-like image).
- Test multiple algorithms and pixel-size ranges per scenario.
- Compare output readability at target sizes (e.g., 16px icon, small avatar).
- Prefer settings that are robust for most users, not only ideal samples.
Scenario quality checks
- Avatar/PFP: face readability, silhouette clarity, color noise control.
- Favicon/Icon: shape legibility at 16px and 32px.
- Sprite: frame-to-frame style consistency and edge clarity.
- Minecraft reference: blocky readability and manageable color count.
Known limitations
- Source images with heavy blur or compression artifacts reduce output quality.
- Highly detailed logos or tiny text may require manual simplification first.
- Fixed retro palettes can intentionally reduce realism to preserve a style.
