Pixel Art for Stream Thumbnails (Mobile-First Settings)

Design pixel-style stream thumbnails that survive tiny mobile previews: composition, contrast, and safe text rules.

Thumbnail constraints are different from avatars

Thumbnails compete in crowded feeds. You need one dominant subject, strong color blocking, and almost no fine text.

  • Design for mobile first (small preview cards)
  • Reserve one corner for optional platform badges
  • Avoid full-screen noise textures

Settings that usually work

Keep this recipe as your starting point for video/game stream thumbnails.

  • Pixel size 8-10 for balanced detail
  • MaxColors 24-40 to keep key gradients
  • Nearest for text/icons, Floyd-Steinberg for portraits

CTR-oriented polish pass

Before publishing, run a quick clickability check.

  • Shrink preview to 20% and verify subject is still obvious
  • Increase local contrast around face/logo only
  • Keep text under 3 words and >= 2 pixel strokes
